Inglehart on Freedom and Happiness

by Will Wilkinson on March 19, 2010

I just ran across this short 2008 clip of Ronald Inglehart talking to Bobbie Mixon of the NSF about the happiness findings in the latest wave of the World Value’s Survey. I’m a big Inglehart fan, so I thought I’d pass this along.

  • Details of this line of Inglehart's research that will warm a liberal's heart:

Isn't personal choice often a FUNCTION OF economic prosperity (i.e., now that I have more money, I get to choose from more cars, houses, women)?
  • Not necessarily. Singapore is very prosperous but restricts various persona choices. Islamic oil monarchies are prosperous but restrict personal choices even more.

Actually, most the Islamic oil monarchies aren't terribly prosperous in any sort of broad measure; they have very wealthy elites certainly, but most of the population does not live like that.
