Will Wilkinson! I can't believe you allowed the name of the execrable Jonathan Chait to stain your otherwise awesome weblog.

The difference between yourself and Chait is roughly analogous to the difference between David Hume and Corky from Life Goes On. At a certain point, you start to wonder how someone like that is smart enough to breathe. Jonathan Chait is about 15 IQ points below that level. He's like the Donald Luskin of the Left. Any stupider and he'd be Kathryn Jean Lopez.

I don't mean libertarians per se (note the small “L”). I mean people who generally favor a more libertarian domestic policy direction, which includes of course the eponymous party, Republicans, and a whole mess of others who don't trust the executive branch to use their personal credit as a hedge against an economic downturn.

My worry is that Obama has appointed these economic heavyweights, largely in order to assuage many a libertarian and even the odd Foxcon (Quoth Britt Hume, “Not a lefty among 'em.”). Like FDR, he will most likely listen respectively and attentively to their sage advice, and then just as respectfully decline to take it. This is his MO, and I don't begrudge him this. Being the left leaning career politician he is, I'd sooner expect a wolf to eat vegan, but wait and see we shall, if this really is the drum circle of a cabinet that we heard advertised when Austan Goolsbee was the original economic golden boy.

The amount of revenue as a percentage of GNP has remained, within a percentage point, constant since the end of WWII. This supports the notion that the best way to raise tax revenues is to grow the economy. The best way to goose growth is to cut taxes, as the Romers have documented in their study. Let's hope Obama gets the message and surprises us.

Christina Romer’s appointment means that we will have at the Council of Economic Advisers an economist with a background in highly relevant economic history and with moderate Keynesian sympathies – just what we need. It is to be hoped that she underatands that one of the key lessons of Keynes is the importance of constructive US leadership in international economic cooperation – including in the international coordination of key economic policies, in building up effective international economic institutions, and in safeguarding free trade. She will be familiar with literature like Donald Moggridge’s biography of Keynes and Donald Markwell’s “John Maynard Keynes and International Relations”, which I think are very helpful in thinking and working our way – nationally and globally – through the present muddle.
