Free Will, Now Freer of Will

It can be tough to prepare for a substantive diavlog (you know, something more than just “let’s talk about the headlines”) every week, so Kerry and I, together with the BHTV authorities, have decided to more or less split weekly Free Will duties. Kerry’s first unresponsibly unheralded Free Will was two weeks ago with MIT philosopher Sally Haslanger. This week she’s up with Kenan Malik, author of Strange Fruit: Why Both Sides Are Wrong in the Race Debate talking about racial categorization, multiculturalism, and the desirability of cultural preservation. For my part, next week I will appear talk with Columbia’s Andrew Gelman about trends in American voting.

Way cool to see Malik on Free Howley. I feared he might be missed over here, more a British phenomenon, with no popular stateside publisher.

If I can offer a suggestion, it would be this: please dispense with the opening banter and joking. If I recall correctly, Kerry's Free Will with Kenan had no banter (maybe because of a technical difficulty). That was great! As much as I like hearing about Iowa or whatever, less of that is better. If you need to say "Hi" to the other person or explain shit to the other person about who you are (beyond the normal intro for BHTV), then do it off-air.

Also, that guy Malik was awesome. Never heard of him before, so I was thrilled to hear his views, and Kerry did the exact right thing by letting him go on and only inserting herself where she wanted clarification or to get the conversation moving again.

Will, I love you man, but you sometimes ride hobby horses and sometimes tend to want to show the other guy that you're smart too. Everyone knows you're really smart, so dispense with that.

Ok, just trying to help Free Will be even better, since it is the best thing on BHTV and I want it to remain so.
