Funny, I thought the U.S. economy only grew at an annual rate of 1.3% in the first quarter of this year.

And China’s GDP grew at a rate of 11.1% in the same period.

The appeal to authority is not fallacious if the listener/reader is given sufficient reason to see the authority as a bona fide expert on the matter at hand. Phelps’ Nobel is surely certification of expertise, as is Eichengreen’s book. Of course, I don’t just say, “Phelps and Eichengreen disagree,” I excerpt and link to their own arguments, which the reader is free to evaluate independently.

I agree with you wholeheartedly, but your argument sounds a lot like an appeal to authority. Just because someone won a Nobel Prize doesn’t mean they’re right about everything.

That is, unless you’re willing to defend Joseph Stiglitz’s disastrous “Globalization and its Discontents.”
