Pictures with Giants

On Saturday I attended a Mercatus Center reception at the American Political Science Association in honor of Douglass North’s new book, Understanding the Process of Economic Change. Doug is an intellectual hero of mine, and I was delighted to finally get a picture with him.

And, as a bonus, I had to opportunity to get a snap with Elinor and Vincent Ostrom, two more heroes of mine.

If you read and understood everything Doug North and the Ostroms have written (something I certainly haven’t done), you would know about as much about the nature of economic and political instutions as anyone alive.

I'll have to read more about the "adaptive efficiency" concepts I understand North and the new Institutionalists favor. It seems to me, though, that we could have skipped straight to the "rational efficiency" school of thought and skipped all the process of moving through institutional change to get to the end product... much like adaptive expectations deals with the process of flowing through inflation to equilibrium while rational expectations cuts to the chase and just recognizes a higher price level without the corresponding rising and falling output levels. We could then just evolve our institutions directly to high levels of functionality.
