Comment Junk

by Will Wilkinson on October 26, 2004

I believe I fixed the comments glitch. Somehow I had told MT-Blacklist to force into moderation any comment that included the string “tp:”, and that would be basically everything.

Will somebody please try commenting below to make sure it’s working?

Tried adding a comment with those characters. Went into comment hell.
  • You have to watch out for that sort of thing. For instance, I once received comment spam that included my own domain among the various links for Viagra, porn, and the like (should I take that as a compliment?). Without checking carefully, I accidentally added it to my blacklist. Had I not caught it I could have accidentally deleted all of my own comments.

I'm actually surprised that spammers don't make heavier use of that strategy. By including legitimate links in their spam, they could make it harder for us bloggers to sort it out, thus perhaps raising the burden enough that less devoted webmasters give up blacklisting entirely. Or it might force the creation of a whitelist. Something to look forward to, perhaps.
  • Tack så mycket, Dennis!
  • A test. Or as we say in Sweden, räven raskar över isen.
